Okay, here we go! Another rookie that has come on strong as of late and seems to be fitting into a rotation in the league is a young-gun out of Butler, Gordon Hayward. Hayward can be most remembered for his last second shot attempt effort against Duke in the NCAA Final that hit off the backboard and rimmed around the rim, before rolling out. Whoa, that was a breath taker. But, the 6-foot-8 forward is starting to show his true colors and why the Utah Jazz drafted him. Although his numbers may seem sleek at 3.3 points per game, Hayward has 13 points in a win against Memphis and 11 in a tough loss on the road to Portland. But, having the ability to watch those two games, here's what we can take for Hayward. First and foremost, his ability to move without the ball and move with a purpose within an offensive system hosted by legendary coach, Jerry Sloan. Within offensive sets, Hayward is very rarely in the wrong spots at the wrong time. He gives Deron Williams another instant scoring option within the dribble penetration and kick out with his readiness and smarts. That is a key element for rookies and it takes some longer than others to master. For this skill, the sooner the better. Number two stems from his readiness on the court and that is his ability to knock down the open jumper and three ball. Hayward has nice range and rarely takes a shot when he is out of rhythm. This gives the Jazz a leg up in shooting percentage and the ability to take good shots within an offensive set. Hayward is also not afraid to put the ball on the floor and get to the basket and create contact, which results in trips to the line. This in a sense is the most effective asset any player at any level can attain because free throws, along with defense can win you ball games. Finally, the only thing that I will leave you with is Hayward's size. He is 6'8'' and that can pose match up problems for smaller guards in a mismatch. The only thing is with his 6'8'' frame, he is listed at 207 pounds. I think strength and adding to his frame is definitely in his future being involved in an NBA system and the future looks certainly bright for the Jazz and this young NBA talent. Peace Up, Threes Down!
